It's is better to go for the full 8GB upgrade now, My question is - Should I upgrade the RAM to 4GB or 8GB? I have a mid 2010 Mac mini with 2GB of RAM.

Mac mini (mid 2010) RAM upgrade 4GB or 8GB It is always the same slot, not dependent on the memory card. I swapped the cards and also reinstalled the original mac memory, still only half of the memory is detected in one slot. Mac Mini mid 2011, installed 2x 4GB memory when first got this machine, has worked well till this year 2015 when it slowed way down and I found memory slot #2 was not working.

Given the premium price (without premium quality), I think this will be my last Mac, after having started with a Plus in the 1980s. But at least then they would repair it for free. was looking like it might not survive, and lots of folks were having such problems. Had similar experience (repeated shorts of logic board, replaced 3 times) with a MacBook c.1997, when Apple Co. Must say I'm pretty disappointed in 'Apple quality'. It won't be a candidate for a Yosemite upgrade coming shortly. Now I'm running on one 8gb memory chip, which dramatically shortens the life of the machine. This got the heat under control, but it looks like the damage was done.

Ended up building a special vertical stand (Mini's venting is rather poor) and installed 'Temperature Monitor' by Marcel Bresink Software, which I recommend, and uninstalled some things (including killing a Mac update process that was running constantly). I saw early heating problems with this after 10.9.5 upgrade. It does sounds like heat related warping. I'm not going to get into 'loosening screws' as suggested in linked discussion, but that may work for a powerbook. It appears the only real fix is a new logic board, which appears is almost as expensive as buying a new machine. Hardware test appears to just ignore an empty slot, so really not helpful (and won't boot with filled slot). Tested both chips in both possible slots, but will always get three tones when either chip is in top slot, fine when that slot is empty. For about two weeks I could get it to reboot by unplugging and giving it some time.

I had constant crashes at sleep beginning about three weeks ago, and three tones at boot. As in that linked tread, overheating after OS upgrade (in my case, Mavericks) seems to be related. I'm having the same issue with a Mid-2011 Mac Mini (purchased June 2013).

The real important task will be when I replace the HD for an SSD drive, but that will have to wait until holidays when I have spare time. I might convert flac to alac using xld and from time to time use handbrake. Is there a point on installing 16GB if I am not doing any monster sized task? All the media I play goes through iTunes directly to the apple tv, so I don't really use the computer to play mkv. I am about to upgrade RAM, and I know the rule of 'buy as much as you can afford', but I am seriously wondering whether I am going to feel the difference between 8 and 16GB if most of my work is not that heavy anyways. The rest of my use is Safari, Pages, iTunes, Garageband, and some light programming with Python and HTML/CSS/JS web design. Now and then I run heavy programs such as Photoshop and After Effects, but is not my regular job, I only do it for assignments from college, so maybe I do heavy tasks one or twice per month. I have a mac mini mid 2011 with a 2,3 GHz Intel Core i5 and 4GB RAM.
